As Mental Health Awareness Week (11th–17th May) shines a spotlight on the theme of 'Action', Read Motor Group has shown how a local business can serve as a powerful hub for community support. Recognising the urgency of national mental health issues, the automotive group focused its efforts on the well-being of its team, its customers, and the wider community by partnering with local charity Shine Lincolnshire.
Following a highly successful 'Wear It Green Day' on 14th May, the team at Read Hyundai Boston proudly raised a fantastic total of £660.79 for the charity.
To drive awareness and collect these vital funds, the Boston dealership transformed its retail space for the day with staff swapping their usual work attire for a green non-uniform day, hosting a cake sale, and running a charity raffle. The day also featured a special visit from Lucy, a representative from Shine Lincolnshire, who spent time at the dealership spreading awareness about the mental health support available in the local area.
The team felt, however, that the initiative's true success was measured by the conversations it sparked. By creating a welcoming and relaxed environment, the dealership broke down the traditional barriers of a showroom, allowing the community to connect on a deeply human level.
Tom Hartfill-Allgood, Health and Safety Compliance Coordinator for Read Motor Group, reflected on the impact of the event:
"I'm extremely proud of the whole team at Read Hyundai Boston for the way they've come together and supported this amazing cause. We had so many people come in to buy cakes and raffle tickets, and at one point, I even found myself having a conversation with a friend about their own mental health struggles. The fact that they felt able to open up is exactly what we were trying to achieve. We need to continue working together to break the stigma around mental health and normalise these open conversations, because mental health matters all the time, not just during Mental Health Awareness Week."
Read Motor Group's Managing Director, Mike Read, also shared
his gratitude for the support received: to address the root causes of poor mental health and to ensure people receive early intervention before reaching a crisis point.
Read Motor Group's Managing Director, Mike Read, also shared his gratitude for the support received:
"I'd just like to say thank you to everyone involved in our dealership team for their enthusiasm and for supporting Shine Lincolnshire. It is a very worthwhile local cause, so thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes, to all our customers, and to everyone who purchased a raffle ticket. We will continue to do more charity events in the future."
In keeping with this year's theme of 'Action', the team also pushed for broader change beyond the fundraising itself. Tom took part in the Mental Health Foundation's national call to action by writing to local MP Richard Tice, formally asking what steps the government is taking to address the root causes of poor mental health and to ensure people receive early intervention before reaching a crisis point.
"The scale of the issue is significant," Tom noted, "and meaningful progress requires coordinated action across government, services, and communities to ensure prevention, early intervention, and accessible support for those who need it most."
Although Wear It Green Day has now passed, Read Motor Group's commitment to the cause continues. The Boston team remains grateful for the community's generosity and encourages everyone to keep the momentum going by joining the Mental Health Foundation's call to action and advocating for better mental health support nationwide.
