MOT Checklist


The vehicle structure and body shell are checked for corrosion or damage in specific areas. Any sharp edge can result in an MOT fail.


The vehicle's braking performance and condition is tested to ensure the braking system is efficient.


The doors are tested to check they open and close correctly from the inside and outside. The latch should be secure in a closed position.


The level of exhaust emissions is tested to ensure the vehicle is emitting the specified g/km. The exhaust should be secure, complete, have no leaks, silences effectively and has no excessive noise.

Fuel System

This is checked for leaks, and the fuel cap fastens and seals securely.


The horn is tested for effectiveness and suitability.


The condition, security and colour of the vehicles lights is tested. The headlamp aim is also checked to make sure it's correct.


These are checked for condition and security.

Registration Plate

The lettering and spacing on the registration plates must meet current regulations and not be altered in any way. During the MOT, the condition and security of the plates will be checked, the format of letters and numbers and their legibility will be checked.


The test will check all compulsory seatbelts are in place and they are in good condition, secure, operate properly and are the correct type.


The front seats are checked for security.

Steering and Suspension

The components of the steering and suspension are checked to ensure they're in the correct condition and operate correctly.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The VIN is checked to ensure it's present and legible.

Wheels and Tyres

The tyres are checked to ensure they're in good condition and secure. The tyre size and type is checked to make sure they are correct for the vehicle, and the tyre depth will be checked too.


This is checked to make sure the windscreen doesn't have any chips or cracks. The maximum damage size is 10mm in the drivers' line of vision or 40mm elsewhere in the remaining area swept by the wiper blades.

Wipers and washer bottle

The wipers and washers are checked to ensure they operate properly.
