If you've been keeping an eye on the electric car market lately, you've probably noticed one name popping up again and again — Hyundai IONIQ. And for good reason. Hyundai has quietly become one of the most exciting players in the EV space, and its IONIQ lineup is proof that going electric doesn't mean compromising on style, comfort, or practicality.
So whether you're EV-curious or already sold on making the switch, here's your friendly guide to everything IONIQ — including some very exciting news about where the range is heading.
IONIQ is Hyundai's dedicated electric vehicle family. Think of it as their all-in commitment to the future of driving — each model shares a bold design language, cutting-edge technology, and an advanced 800V architecture that enables ultra-fast charging, recovering 10–80% battery in approximately 18 minutes under optimal conditions. The Hyundai Electric Grant is available in addition to purchasing a new IONIQ.
The IONIQ 5 is where the IONIQ story really took off. It's a head-turning electric SUV that looks unlike anything else on the road, with its retro-futuristic styling and pixel lighting design.
Under the skin, it's available with two battery options — a 63kWh pack good for 273 miles, or an 84kWh version capable of up to 354 miles. It can charge from 10–80% in just 18 minutes at up to 260kW.
Then there's the performance variant — the IONIQ 5 N. Its electric motors spin up to 21,000 RPM, delivering up to 609 PS under normal conditions — or 650 PS when N Grin Boost is engaged, maximising acceleration for up to 10 seconds.
If the IONIQ 5 is the bold SUV, the IONIQ 6 is its elegant, aerodynamic sibling. A streamlined electric saloon that's just as capable and just as packed with tech — it's perfect for those who want something a little more refined on the outside.
Both the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 are triple winners at the World Car of the Year Awards in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
New to the range and already making waves, the IONIQ 9 is Hyundai's flagship seven-seat electric SUV. All IONIQ 9 models feature a 110kWh battery, with a choice of Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD, or 427PS AWD Performance powertrains — all with a standard heat pump and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. Range-wise, the most efficient single-motor IONIQ 9 manages up to 385 miles on a charge. RAC, and it's already picked up the gong for Large Crossover of the Year at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2026. Prices start from £64,995 — which, while significant, undercuts premium rivals like the Volvo EX90 by over £15,000.
Here's the really exciting part. This week, Hyundai pulled the covers off the brand new IONIQ 3 at Milan Design Week — and it's set to be the most accessible IONIQ yet.
The IONIQ 3 is Hyundai's first compact electric vehicle in the series — a smaller, more affordable sibling to the IONIQ 5. It features a new "Aero Hatch" design that optimises efficiency and interior space. It'll be available with two battery options: a 42.2kWh standard battery offering 213 miles of range, and a larger 61kWh long-range version capable of 308 miles. Rapid charging from 10–80% takes around 29–30 minutes.
In Europe, the IONIQ 3 is expected to arrive at dealers in Q3 2026, with UK pricing expected to start at around £25,000, making it one of the most competitive compact EVs on the market.
And the big picture? Hyundai's President & CEO has confirmed that five new models will launch in Europe over the next 18 months, with every Hyundai model sold in Europe set to have an electrified version by 2027.
