On Friday, 26 September 2025, Read Hyundai Grimsby hosted our very first Macmillan Coffee Morning. The event brought together colleagues, customers, friends, and family to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support while enjoying cakes, raffles, and a real sense of community. By the end of the morning, we had raised £210 — a wonderful contribution to help people living with cancer across the UK.
As autumn arrived, our team wanted this Coffee Morning to be more than just coffee and cake. Our goals were simple:
We spread the word with showroom posters, social media, and conversations with customers booking services or test drives. Colleagues from other Read Motor Group locations shared tips and encouragement — and kept a keen eye on our cake photos!
On the day, our showroom quickly filled with bakes brought by colleagues, friends, and family. There were flapjacks, Rice crispy desserts, sprinkle cake (which we jokingly called “rainbow cake”), and many other sweet treats. The staff bake off was a huge success, with everyone joining in. By mid-morning, we had more than enough cakes to keep us going well into the weekend.
To add extra excitement, we ran a football raffle where guests could select their favourite team for the chance to win a hamper lovingly made by our colleague Pam. The raffle was a hit and added another layer of fun to the morning.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended, we raised £210 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Every penny will support essential services, from keeping the Macmillan nurse support line running to providing grants for families in need.
Beyond the money raised, the day created a wonderful atmosphere. Colleagues came together in new ways. Customers saw a different side of our dealership. Conversations naturally turned to personal stories about how Macmillan has helped people’s lives.
The buzz continued online, with plenty of cake photos and smiling faces shared on social media. By the end of the day, it was clear this would not be a one off — staff are already planning next year’s Coffee Morning, and customers left inspired to host their own events.
Our first Coffee Morning showed what happens when people come together: kindness, connection, and a stronger sense of community.
Every year, cancer affects millions of people across the UK. It touches not only patients, but families, friends, workplaces, and communities. The journey brings more than physical suffering — it can create emotional strain, financial pressure, and social challenges.
For over a century, Macmillan Cancer Support has been a constant source of help and hope. Their message is simple: “We do whatever it takes to support people living with cancer.” Today, more than 3.5 million people in the UK are living with cancer, a number expected to rise above 4 million by 2030. The pressure on care services continues to grow.
Community fundraising is vital. Macmillan relies on voluntary donations for 98% of its funding. Local events, individual giving, and business partnerships provide the lifeblood of their work.
Macmillan’s Wide-Ranging Support
Macmillan offers much more than medical help. In 2024, their nurses, support workers, and palliative care specialists helped around 700,000 people. They run a free information and support line every day of the year, from 8 am until 8 pm.
They also provide practical and financial guidance, helping people navigate benefits and support schemes. In 2024, over £44 million in direct financial aid was provided. Macmillan produces booklets, online resources, and local support centres to make information easy to access. Volunteers also play a huge role, with over 11,000 people contributing more than 100,000 hours last year.
On a wider scale, Macmillan campaigns for better cancer services, challenges health inequalities, and works with the NHS and government to improve care. They invest in research and innovation to improve patient support and sustainable end-of-life care. All of this is made possible by public generosity — from bake sales and marathons to monthly donations and business partnerships.
The Macmillan Coffee Morning Tradition
The Macmillan Coffee Morning, often called The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, began in 1990 as a simple idea: friends gathering over coffee and donating the cost to Macmillan. Since then, it has grown into a national and international tradition.
In 2024 alone, more than 52,000 Coffee Mornings took place, raising over £17.1 million. Since the first event, Coffee Mornings have raised more than £310 million. They celebrate baking, friendly rivalry, and community spirit — all while supporting people affected by cancer.
The beauty of the Coffee Morning is its simplicity. You don’t need to run a marathon or climb a mountain — just gather, share a hot drink, and enjoy some treats. Events can be small home gatherings, office bake sales, or even themed afternoons at local groups and cafes.
What Happens at a Coffee Morning
Every Coffee Morning is unique, but a few things are always at the heart of it:
The Bake Sale: Tables of cakes, biscuits, traybakes, and savoury treats baked by friends, colleagues, and local bakers.
Friendly Competition: A light-hearted bake off where guests can vote for their favourite bakes.
Games and Raffles: Quizzes, raffles, and guessing games to boost fundraising.
Community and Connection: The heart of it all — bringing people together, remembering loved ones, and supporting those currently facing cancer.
Our 2025 Macmillan Coffee Morning will not be our last. The generosity and energy it created showed that Read Hyundai Grimsby, and the wider Read Motor Group, can be a catalyst for community support all year round. For 2026, we are planning bigger bakes, more raffle prizes, and inviting local businesses to join in.
