Read Motor Group: Changing the Face of Men's Health This Movember

As the calendar flips to November, you might start noticing a few more questionable moustaches appearing around our showrooms and service centres here at Read Motor Group. That's right—it's Movember!

For those unfamiliar, Movember is a global movement dedicated to changing the face of men's health. It involves hundreds of thousands of people around the world growing a moustache (or supporting someone who is) to raise vital funds and awareness for men's health issues. This year, the Read Motor Group team is proudly taking part as 'Mo Bros' to support this incredible campaign.

Why Movember is Important: The Facts We Must Face

Movember is a global powerhouse focused on raising vital funds and driving conversation around three major areas of men's health that are often overlooked or stigmatised. At Read Motor Group, we feel it is crucial to share the facts that underpin this movement:

1. Prostate Cancer: The Most Common Male Cancer

While often treatable, prostate cancer diagnosis rates are alarmingly high.

  • The UK Reality: There are around 55,300 new prostate cancer cases in the UK every year—that’s 150 men diagnosed every single day.
  • Know Your Risk: In the UK, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. For Black men, this risk is even higher, rising to 1 in 4.
  • Movember's Impact: Movember funds crucial research, but importantly, it also partners with organisations like Prostate Cancer UK to encourage men over 50 (or 45 for Black men) to check their risk and talk to their doctor. Early detection dramatically increases the survival rate.

2. Testicular Cancer: The Young Man's Fight

Testicular cancer is one of the most highly curable cancers when caught early, but it remains the most common cancer in younger men.

  • The Age Group: It primarily affects men aged 15 to 49, with incidence rates highest for those aged 30 to 34 in the UK.
  • The Good News: Thanks to awareness and medical advances, more than 96% of men diagnosed with testicular cancer in the UK survive their disease for ten years or more.
  • The Focus: The key message driven by Movember is self-examination—knowing your body and reporting changes immediately.

3. Mental Health and Suicide Prevention: Breaking the Silence

This is perhaps the most urgent crisis in men's health, and it's why Movember encourages men to take action, talk openly, and seek support.

  • The Suicide Gap: Tragically, in the UK, three times more men are likely to die by suicide than women.
  • The High-Risk Group: The highest suicide rate in the UK is found in men aged 40 to 49.
  • The Stigma: While 12.5% of men in England have a mental health disorder, only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men. Movember works to break down the traditional expectations that prevent men from seeking help.

By participating in Movember, we're not just growing questionable facial hair; we're sparking conversations, challenging the silence, and raising funds that fuel over 1,250 men's health projects globally. It's about creating a world where men take better care of their health, feel comfortable discussing serious issues, and live happier, healthier, longer lives.
