MG Motability Adaptations

The Motability Scheme offers hundreds of adaptations ranging from simple driving controls to person hoists to lift a wheelchair user into a standard car. All our adaptations are designed to help make your driving, or travelling, experience as comfortable as possible and depending on which adaptations you choose they can help you drive, stow your wheelchair or scooter, or get in and out of the car.

Not all adaptations are suitable for every car and that's why it's so important to consider the adaptations you need before you need before you choose your car. This way your car is delivered with the adaptations fitted and the best bit is that when arranged at the start of your lease, some of the most popular adaptations come at no extra cost! We use local adaptation installers and these are the best people to give advice on which adaptations might best suit your needs, especially if you are considering stowage or access adaptations.

How do adaptations help and how do I get them?

Depending on the type of adaptations you choose, they help you to drive, where previously you’ve been unable; remove the strain of accessing a car and stowing your wheelchair.

Should I consider adaptations?

The term 'adaptations' is used for a range of different products that have been designed to help improve either your driving or travelling experience. But how do you know what you need? The best place to start is to think about your current car experiences and what you find difficult. With over 600,000 customers currently on the scheme, there aren't many problems they haven’t encountered and we’re sure that there are adaptations to help make travelling either more comfortable or easier.

However, there are some issues which can be solved simply by choosing the right car. Features such as automatic gearbox, push-button ignition, parking sensors and boots with flat entry might make a huge difference. At Read MGwe are able to recommend different models of cars that may suit your needs. However, if you suspect that you need more help with driving, accessing your car or stowing your wheelchair then adaptations could be the answer.

Adaptations are divided into three categories: to help you drive, to help you stow your wheelchair or scooter and to help you get in and out of your car. The video clips show how each of the adaptations work.

Driving

Driving adaptations help with speed control, steering and signalling, and they vary from simple attachments to replacing all existing controls with a system individually designed for you. Watch the following videos to see examples of the most popular driving adaptations on the Scheme.

Access

There are a number of adaptations that can be installed on a standard car to help access your car, if you are a wheelchair user. Watch the following videos to see examples of adaptations that may help you access your vehicle more comfortably.

Stowage

The best way to lift your wheelchair or scooter into your car is with a stowage system, such a boot hoists or rooftop stowage unit. Watch the following videos to see these adaptations in action.

The individual adaptations you need will be determined by a range of factors including the car you choose; your physical ability to use adapted driving controls or the weight or your wheelchair. Your adaptations installer is the best person to advise which adaptations might be suitable and what it will cost to get these adaptations.
